This is a complete rebuild restoration of a Maico 400 MC (MotoCross).
This bike has a very unique feature with it's airbox. A custom vinyl splash / water shield has been attached at top to help shield from mud/water ingress. Has snaps to remove for cleaning. Still allows plenty of air to enter during competition. Very trick, and I've never seen this feature on a Maico before. In my opinion it appears to be something that the Maico factory should have included on all their MX bikes. Quite possibly a WheelSmith modified airbox that was designed for muddy/wet course competition.
This '74 radial head engine was completely rebuilt with an all new crank, rod, bearings/seals, & piston kit from Germany. It is currently at 1.5mm overbore with zero hours on it. Correct externally sprung forks were rebuilt with new seals, oil, and rubber fork boots. Original wheels were re-rebuilt with all new stainless spokes, new brakes, and a nice set of newer vintage Metzler copy knobby tires. Wheels were restored and new stainless spokes from Buchannan were laced up in correct cross-two pattern. Front wheel is correct (and new for '74) aluminum conical hub. Rims are vapor blasted original Akronts with no dings or flat spots and are in really excellent condition. Nice set of vintage Maico bend chrome handle bars. Correct early Magura hand controls and 'trap-door' throttle. New cables. New chain. etc.
Orig. fiberglass tank & airbox were restored and are just about perfect. Seat cover is a vintage 'GP' seat that sits much taller, and has much thicker foam than stock. New correct rear sprocket is steel. Wheelsmith folding footpegs. Correct Bing 54 carb was cleaned and rebuilt. All new rubber seals & bearings in chassis head stock, etc.
About this bike:
Stunning resto of a rare competition Maico. I am the second owner of this original narrow frame radial head Maico. This bike has been here in AZ it's whole life, and has competed in and around Phoenix on MX and desert courses throughout it's life. Engine now has brand new 2nd over top end. Bike was run once and had all fuels drained and stored properly. Runs amazing but engine will need a proper break in before any competition. Bike looks amazing as well. Has vintage knobby tires on it currently and they are at around 99% tread remaining. New: brakes (this Maico STOPS!), bearings, seals. New clutch, etc. etc. Original aluminum shift lever. Original rear brake lever & rods. Original kick start lever has excellent threads at shaft. Excellent original chain guide with new roller.
Now sporting a nice set of vintage finned aluminum Poppi Koni shocks that were a popular upgrade that most of the factory riders preferred (like Ake Jonsson). Forks work perfectly with no leaks and excellent damping. Rear shocks were only cosmetically restored (not rebuilt) and are probably good for display only, but look great.
Vintage Maico pipe w/ integral silencer has a couple very small dings, otherwise excellent condition. Frame was completely disassembled, inspected, cleaned, and restored. Inspected during rebuild and any imperfections corrected prior to new Maico silver paint.
Correct all original FIBERGLASS airbox, new Uni filter, new chain, sprockets, etc. Compression release works well.
This is a
beautiful bike
that has had everything done to it. Runs as good as it looks.
Needs nothing.
Please look at photos....this is a stunning bike ready to show (but built to race).
LOOK at PHOTOS as this is your best idea of bike's condition.
