This is a complete rebuild restoration of the only matching number 501 Maico in the world. 99.99% 501's came with non-matching numbered frame/engine combinations, as the Maico factory line workers would just pick any 501 motor off the shelf and install into any 501 frame, regardless of numbers. It is a miracle that this engine matches this frame.
This engine was completely rebuilt with an all new crank, rod, bearings/seals, & piston kit from Germany. It took 3 years to source these parts as they are now pretty much 'unobtanium'. Forks were re-chromed (triple chromed, no more pitting). Correct externally sprung forks rebuilt with new seals, oil, and rubber fork boots. Original wheels re-chromed and rebuilt with all new stainless spokes, new brakes, and a nice set of almost new vintage Metzler knobbies. Rims are excellent with no dings or flat spots. Original bolt-on crossbar handle bars are perfect. New Magura grips. Correct early Magura hand controls and 'trap-door' throttle. New cables. All Maico bolts were freshly cadmium plated.
All fiberglass tank, airbox, and ft/rr fenders are restored and just about perfect. New seat foam on original base with new cover. New correct rear sprocket is aluminum instead of steel. Original footpegs and brake/shifter controls. Correct Bing 54 carb. All new rubber seals, bearings, etc.
    About this bike:
Stunning resto of a rare competition Maico. I am the third owner of this original narrow frame square barrel Maico. Brand new 1st over top end. Bike was run once and had all fuels drained and stored properly. Runs amazing but engine will need a proper break in before any competition. Bike looks amazing as well. Has vintage Metzler tires on it currently and they are at around 99% tread remaining. New: brakes (this Maico STOPS!), bearings, seals. New clutch, etc. etc. Original 'ankle buster' foot pegs still in place. Original aluminum shift lever. Original rear brake lever & rods. Original kick start lever has excellent threads at shaft and was re-chromed---looks new.
Original vintage shrouded Girling shocks. Forks and shocks work perfectly with no leaks and excellent damping. Chrome on both fork tubes are beautiful.
Vintage Bassani pipe w/ integral silencer has a couple very small dings, otherwise excellent condition.
Correct all original FIBERGLASS fenders and airbox, new Uni filter, new chain, sprockets, etc. Compression release works well.
This is a beautiful bike that has had everything done to it. Runs as good as it looks.
    Needs nothing.
Please look at photos....this is a stunning bike ready to show (but built to race).
LOOK at PHOTOS as this is your best idea of bike's condition.
SOLD AS A CORE REBUILDER with NO warrantee or guarantee of ANY KIND. This is a used 50 year old competition motorcycle and is sold AS-IS. Please ask questions if unsure about anything. Thanks for looking.
PAYMENT: I am not a big fan of paypal fees, especially on big ticket items like my bikes. If you want to pay me the total amount via paypal, you may do so only if you are willing to pay full price ('buy it now' option). Then I will absorb the fees. If you want to make me a lower offer, then you will need to add the 4% (international add 5%) to our agreed upon price to cover those fees.
